A baby monitor is a great way for parents to feel at ease when they can’t be in the same room as their baby.  At night you can sleep in another room while still being able to hear or see when your baby wakes to be changed or fed.  During the day a monitor can give you the freedom of doing other things around the house during nap time.

The type of baby monitor you choose depends on the location of your baby’s room in relation to where you will be, the type of building you live in and how much you want to spend (how many extra features you want).  If your room is far from your baby’s room and you have cement walls, you will want a monitor with a strong transmitter.  If you would feel more comfortable seeing and hearing your baby, than an audio/video monitor is the one for you.

Audio-Video Monitors This type of monitor lets you see and hear your baby.  Audio / video monitors consist of a small camera that you place on a table near the crib or mount to a wall and a small television or handheld television.  Some models even have infrared cameras so that you can still view your baby in the dark.

Things to think about when buying

  • Frequency – The less expensive monitors operate on a 49 MHz frequency, which can lead to more interference from other radio operating devices, such as cell phones, cordless phones or other monitors.  The better 900 MHz monitors are less likely to experience interference from other sources.  Some models are now even available in 2.4GHz, which will provide the widest possible frequency and the best clarity.
  • Power source – Transmitters and receivers that are battery operated are good for moving around, but you will have to buy a lot of batteries.  Look for models that can either use batteries and A/C adapters or models that have rechargeable batteries.
  • Low battery indicator – Transmitters and receivers that have a low battery indicator are helpful in reminding you to replace or recharge the batteries.
  • Volume controls – An adjustable volume is handy when you don’t want to hear every sound your baby makes.
  • Multiple channels – Monitors with multiple channels allow you to find a channel with the least amount of interference.
  • Sound activated lights – Receivers that light up when a noise is detected are helpful when you’re doing something that prevents you from actually hearing your baby’s cries.
  • Double receivers – Some models come with two receivers, which can be handy if you want to leave one in a room and have the other for moving around your home.
  • Size – lightweight compact size receivers are easier to carry around.  If you are considering an audio/video type monitor, think about how you will be using it.  If the TV will usually be in one room, the small size TV set will work for you.  If you will be going from room to room and moving around a lot, then you might consider getting the handheld size TV.
